Weekly Feature: Premier League’s under-performing XI

18 Yard Box is back with its weekly feature of the Premier League Under-performing 11.

Its a list where no one wants his name on but some have to face the grueling criticism of our writers. A list which no player would be proud to appear on.

18 Yard Box's Pranav Byatnal has a look at 11 such players who did not play properly in their matches.

Week's under-performing 11

Steve Harper - GK (Newcastle United)

Had a terrible game against The Red Devils. Gave away the ball to Welbeck but was lucky enough not have conceded. Pulled some good saves later but overall, Harper had a poor game.

Russell Martin- RB (Norwich City)

This game is one which Martin would like to forget as soon as possible. Pitted against the likes of Hazard and Mata, Russell Martin had no answer to their superb skills and ball control. Certainly a bad day at the office for him as well as his fellow defenders.

Robert Huth -CB (Stoke City)

He simply couldn’t manage Luis Suarez. Huth has been a consistent performer for Stoke City but had a very bad game against The Reds. He committed silly, rash challenges but surprisingly managed to stay on the pitch for the entire duration of the game.

Carlos Cuellar -CB (Sunderland)

He had an absolutely horrendous game. The ex-Villain looked shaky right from the start and his ultimately his bad tackle on Tevez led to City’s first goal. That was not all, Kolarov who scored the first put a good cross from the left and Cuellar let Aguero sneak in behind and easily put the ball into the net.

Emmerson Boyce- LB (Wigan Athletic)

Deployed on the Right side of defence, Boyce had to deal with the lively Steven Pienaar. He struggled to keep up with the South African and had a further torrid time whenever Baines surged forward, Hardly contributed anything while going forward.

Steven Gerrard - CM (Liverpool)

Another not so impressive performance by the Reds’ captain. Stevie G seems to be trying too much to pull his side out of the rut. He is being heavily criticised from pundits for trying to play adventurous and fancy balls a bit too often. Couldn’t really push the team forward and his long balls were easily lapped by the Stoke defenders. If Liverpool are to bounce back to a respectable position then Gerrard has to step upto the plate and lead his team from the front as he has done for the past decade.

Nathan Dyer- LM (Swansea City)

Made good runs into the box but his delivery into the box was poor. He dribbled past the defenders with ease but he is a player who can turn the game on its head. Unfortunately in this game, Dyer put in an average performance against Reading.

Clint Dempsey -CM (Tottenham Hotspurs)

He was hardly seen in the first half but improved in the second half of the game. Managed to string a few passes together but he was nowhere near his usual best. He missed a great goal-scoring opportunity when he headed Walker’s cross off target.

Kevin Nolan - RM (West Ham)

The Hammers’ captain put in loads of effort, moving up & down the pitch to curb Arsenal’s attacks. With the game all squared at 1-1, Nolan squandered a glorious chance to put his team into the lead. Later, he flashed a shot well wide of the target from a range where he sould have at least tested the keeper. From then on Arsenal broke free scored 2 spectacular goals and walked away with all 3 points. Had he scored at that point, Nolan could have  single-handedly changed the outcome of the match.

Steven Fletcher- CF (Sunderland)

If there was one man who could have caused trouble for Man City, it was Steven Fletcher. Having made his move to the Black Cats this summer, the Striker has notched up 5 goals in as many games for his new team. He looked out of sorts in this game credit of which must go to the defenders who restricted him to just a few shots from long range.  But then, much was expected from the Scot who has scored regularly this season.

Papiss Cisse- CF (Newcastle United)

Papiss Cisse is just not able to find the back of the net this season. His striking partner, Demba Ba, has been a regular feature on the score sheet but he somehow hasn’t found his groove yet. Hardly any noticeable contribution by him in the entire game, Cisse, who set EPL alight when he arrived here, must start scoring soon.
