The Raging Bull in Europe!

The commercialization of football and the gargantuan amounts of money seen in the beautiful game have been matters of considerable debate among football fans. Many established European powerhouses have often accused their nouveau riche opponents of buying titles with considerable support from their wealthy owners, who are willing to pump ludicrous amounts into the club. Sometimes, as in the case of Portsmouth or Monaco, the project fails, while sometimes, like with PSG and Chelsea, one encounters a new giant in the making. The big-money contracts coming in from China might make a few heads turn and take notice but none of them can quite match the furore caused by Dietrich Mateschitz and his global energy drink company, RedBull.

RedBull's burgeoning football empire
18YardBox has a closer look at RedBull’s growing football empire and the surrounding controversy

RedBull Salzburg

SV Austria Salzburg

The drastic change in colours
After successfully incorporating a Formula 1 team named Redbull Racing in 2005, Mateschitz turned his focus towards football in 2005 in his home country of Austria. RedBull acquired SV Austria Salzburg, a team based in Wals-Siezenheim. The acquisition resulted in significant controversy when RedBull renamed the club, changed its colours from the traditional violet and white to the current Red and White and changed the crest in order to incorporate the Redbull logo. In a move that further irked the SV Austria faithful, RedBull claimed on the club website that the club was founded in 2005. The move was, however, reversed after the intervention of the Austrian FA. After futile negotiations with the new owners and months of protests, the traditional fans formed a new club, SV Austria Salzburg.

Austrian Domination

Celebrating yet another double in 2015-16
RedBull’s riches ensured RB Salzburg access to the best coaching staff and world-class training facilities. Under the tutelage of Giovani Trapatoni, Salzburg captured the Austrian Bundesliga in 2006-07 after a barren spell of 10 years. Dutchman Ricardo Moniz was appointed as the Global Director of youth development who oversaw the academies in 4 different continents. After a series of sackings, Moniz took over as the manager of RB Salzburg in 2011 with a mandate to integrate the youth academy products into the first team. In 2011-12, he became the first manager in the Austrian league to complete the double before resigning after altercations with the board. Moniz was replaced by the effervescent German, Roger Schmidt who led RB Salzburg to their second title in 3 years. With the experienced Ralf Rangnick in charge of club’s style of play, training methods and transfer policy, Salzburg started scouting and poaching talented young players across Europe who could be groomed to be superstars of the future. In came the likes of Sadio Mane, Kevin Kampl, Valon Berisha, Jonathan Soriano, Naby Keita, Takumi Minamino and Alan who cemented Salzburg’s dominance in Austria. Despite their domestic success, European success evaded the team whose best result was a Round of 16 finish in the Europa League during the 2013-14 season.

Is Austria lucrative enough?

In search of greener pastures
Many of Salzburg’s young Turks have departed for more competitive and lucrative leagues in Europe and Asia. Sadio Mane (to Southampton), Kevin Kampl (to Borussia Dortmund), Alan (to Guanghzou Evergrande) are some of the stars that have gone to bigger and better things. Critics would say RedBull Salzburg has been a big fish in a little pond and their owner has made no qualms about it.

"It would be naive to think we could have kept a Kampl or Ramalho here. Our concept is as clear as two plus two equals four."Dietrich Mateschitz

Salzburg has managed to identify talents and bring them through their academy or feeder teams and subsequently sell for a high fee before replacing the departed players in a similar fashion. This has helped them establish domestic dominance while keeping the wage bill in check. The modus operandi is similar to that of Portuguese giants Benfica or Porto. However, with a squad burgeoning with young and ambitious players, domestic success, especially in Austria, is not enough. Salzburg seems to have hit a glass ceiling as many players don’t find the Austrian league as a lucrative platform to showcase their talent and challenge Europe’s elite. If RedBull were to compete with European powerhouses, a move to neighbouring Germany was the logical step.

Rassenball Sport Leipzig

The East-west divide

No East German team in the Bundesliga since 2009

Post World War 2, West and East Germany had their own football leagues and traditional giants. The West had Bayern Munich, Hamburg, Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach while East Germany had FC Magdeburg, Carl Zeiss Jena, FC Union Berlin and Dynamo Dresden. Post Reunification, East German teams struggled to compete financially against the mighty West German clubs. In matter of a few years, all East German star players were seen playing for Western German clubs. The lack of financial strength and draining of top talent caused nearly all top Eastern German clubs to be relegated to the lower divisions. Most East German teams continue to languish in the lower leagues. Only four teams from East Germany have reached the Bundesliga out of the 38 that have played in the top tier of the German league system since the 1993-94 season. With a rich history of football and citizens hungry for top level football, Leipzig welcomed RedBull with open arms.

SSV Markranstadt
The bovine abomination of a crest
Previously a fifth-tier team called SSV Markranstädt, the club’s licence was acquired in 2009 by Red Bull, who promptly rebranded their acquisition by changing their name, crest and kit before beginning their quick ascent through the divisions. A deeper understanding of the ethos of German football is required to understand why this move was so controversial. German football has always prided itself on community involvement in the game. In order to prevent the commercialisation of the game and to keep the fans invested with the club, Bundesliga has the ‘50+1’rule which warrants that 50% plus one share of the club’s shares be owned by fans or supporters’ association. RedBull did not break the rule but violated the spirit of the rule by charging exorbitant membership fees (10 times that of Bayern Munich) and ensuring that shares are held by Redbull employees or agents. Even the name RassenBall Leipzig is a clever way to circumvent DFB rules which prevent commercial exploitation of club names. These under-handed tactics have quickly made RB Leipzig one of the most hated teams in Germany.

The Fallout
Some of the profanities on display in a game against Hoffenheim
Rival fans view RBL as nothing but a RedBull proxy for marketing energy drinks. Dynamo Dresden fans had notoriously thrown a severed bull’s head during a League game. Union Berlin's matchday programme contained a page on the history of bull farming rather than one about RB Leipzig. Before a recent match at Bayer Leverkusen home fans threw paint at the Leipzig team bus. Certain Borussia Dortmund fans boycotted the game at the Red Bull Arena instead preferring to attend their U-23 team’s home game. Inspite of the protests, RBL has their own set of supporters, not least those East German locals who have been starved of any kind of success since VfB Leipzig were relegated in 1994 and have warmly embraced their new club.

Ralf Rangnick – The Architect of RB Leipzig

The Ralf and Ralph show: Rangnick (left) with Hasenhuttl
After promotion into the 4th division, Leipzig struggled to gain promotion to the 3. Liga. The club appointed Ralf Rangnick as the new sporting director. Under his charge, RBL secured back to back promotion from the 4th division to the 2nd division of German football. Armed with Redbull’s 100mn Euro transfer kitty, Rangnick proceeded to sign the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Yussuf Poulsen, Anthony Jung, David Selke and Emil Forsberg from clubs in Germany and smaller leagues in Europe. Rangnick has a blanket rule of not signing players over the age of 24.

The future is here and it is now
After RBL failed to sign a manager in 2014-15, Rangnick took over as the first team manager. A former manager of Stuttgart, Hannover 96, Hoffenheim and Schalke, Rangnick is an innovative tactician known to implement the frenetic pressing game that has since come to define the game in Germany. He would describe his playing style as:

"Aggressive forward defending and pressing. Playing in private possession and directly to the front, lateral and back passes are rather not so much in demand... The aim is to develop teams, no soloists."

After Leipzig’s promotion to the Bundesliga, Rangnick handed the over reigns to Ralph Hasenhuttl. Nicknamed the Alpine Klopp, Hasenhuttl has developed a reputation of an overachiever with his previous club, Ingolstadt. A shrewd tactician and master motivator, Hasenhuttl is the right man for a squad full of young, raw talent with plenty to prove and a lot to learn.

The systemic demolition of Salzburg
When RedBull were in talks of setting up RB Leipzig, Redbull claimed that what happens in Saxony would not impact its operations in Salzburg.
Will he keep his word or has he broken it already?
Dietrich Mateschitz said, "What happens in Leipzig does not have any effect on Salzburg. When there are two clubs, one in Germany and one in Austria, the strength of each league determines where the main focus lies. Salzburg will always have a team that is so strong that it can compete in the league for the title and play internationally. This should remain so."
End of the Salzburg Project: Oscar Garcia at his wits end
However, Leipzig’s continued progress and the potential for growth in Germany has seen a mass exodus of Salzburg’s brightest talents to Germany. In a matter of 3 windows, 9 players from RB Salzburg switched to the sister entity in Leipzig with the French defender, Dayot Upamecano being the latest to switch allegiances. This move has caused a strong resentment among RB Salzburg fans and head Oscar Garcia who has spoken out against the step motherly treatment meted out to his club. RB Salzburg fans have also sung chants against their favoured cousins in Germany. For a club on the cusp of breaking into Europe’s elite competition, the feeder club status is seen as an insulting step back. Some RB Salzburg players have also spoken out against this 'injustice' done to RB Salzburg.
Martin Hinterreger preferred to sign for Augsburg than betray RB Salzburg
The way in which Leipzig is destroying Salzburg is not nice to see. I find it a shame that we have two different clubs. Yet everything is directed towards Leipzig. Everything is for their benefit, while Salzburg are ignored. The Leipziger simply take what they need. Salzburg are never able to build a real team.” -  Martin Hinteregger.

Is RBL the big bad wolf they’re made out to be?

Inspite of all the hatred and criticism, has RB Leipzig destroyed the beautiful game and made the club nothing more than an obscene billboard for bovine branded energy drinks? In terms of ruining the ethos of the game, RBL has done far less damage than Chelsea or the sheikhs that run Man City and PSG. RBL’s transfer expenses were more than all other 2. Bundesliga teams combined but were commensurate with a team of their ambition. The absence of marquee names in the squad is yet another encouraging sign of the club’s mindset. Even after being promoted to the Bundesliga, RBL invested in a talented youngster like Oliver Burke from Nottingham Forest rather than an established star. Unlike some of the giants of the league which are known to sign players from direct rivals on their financial might, RBL’s strategy of signing young players from around the world and moulding them into finished stars is commendable. The average age of the first team which is currently 2nd in the Bundesliga is only 23 years. Instead of languishing in the reserves or perennially being on loan (like most talented youngsters for top English clubs like Chelsea), Redbull has given them a project to believe in and fight for.

Leipzig's brigade: 2nd in the Bundesliga after 17 matches
RBL is providing opportunities to youngsters in East Germany to make a mark in the game through their youth system. Critics might point out that in their entire first-team squad last season, RBL had only two players who came from East Germany, and only one from Leipzig but it is noteworthy that the German national team has only one East German (Toni Kroos) in its current squad. The question remains whether Red Bull’s strategy can provide a long-term solution for the former East Germany’s football landscape, which was ravaged by lack of funds and the opportunistic scouts of West German clubs for the past 20 years.
For some RB Leipzig is the shot in the arm East German Football needed
The rapid and rather alien commercialisation of football in Germany isn’t strictly restricted to RBL. Over the past decade there are a few instances of German clubs finding a sugar daddy to finance their title challenge against the mighty Bavarians of Munich. Before RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim’s rise from an amateur club to a Bundesliga team on the back of SAP co-founder, Dietmar Hopp’s financial support was criticised for the club’s lack of tradition and a proper fan base as the club is from a village of just 3,300 inhabitants. Wolfburg (owned by Volkswagen) and Bayer Leverkuesen (owned by Pharma giant, Bayer) are also subject to constant criticism for their corporate backing.
Broadcasting Revenues: The bone of contention
Despite being one of Europe’s biggest leagues, the Bundesliga isn’t able to generate TV viewership revenue at the same level as the Premier League or the La Liga. The main reason for this lack of interest in the league is the domination of Bayern Munich and the perceived lack of any genuine contenders. The introduction of Red Bull Leipzig is a welcome addition to a league which has fast become Bayern Munich vs the rest of Germany. Any form of competition adds value and prestige to the league and RB Leipzig’s challenge will only help the Bundesliga and its revenue generation capabilities in the long run.

With rumours afloat of RedBull trying to acquire a club in England, the footballing world can only wait and watch what this energy drink giant has in store for European football.

Match Preview: Manchester United vs. Liverpool

The Premier League returns this week with yet another big game as Manchester United take on arch rivals Liverpool in a game pegged to throw open their bid for Champions’ League qualification. 6th placed United have been on a 9 match winning streak but continue to trail league leaders Chelsea by 10 points. Liverpool have been in breath-taking form in front of goal and by far look the closest to match Chelsea’s relentless march towards the title but their form off late has been patchy which United would look to capitalise on.

18Yardbox’s Pranav Shenoy has a look:

Manchester United
Manchester United had a turbulent start to their campaign which saw Jose Mourinho failing to identify his best starting eleven and integrate new signings into the first team. Over the next few months, United’s performances improved drastically but they failed to make their chances count resulting in a string of draws. United have since gone on a 9 match winning streak across all competitions. In an encouraging sign for Mourinho, United have scored 20 goals in their last nine games with nine players getting their names on the score sheet.

Will the Special One still be smiling at the end of this one?

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1)
David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Talking Points

United's trio would look to make an impact
The man at the heart of Manchester United’s attacking resurrection is 35 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has netted 13 goals in 19 appearances since his arrival from Paris St. Germain. The talismanic Swede would look to exploit Liverpool’s shaky defence and make up for his missed chance during the game at Anfield. United have an array of attacking talent at their disposal with the likes of Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney struggling to find a spot in the starting eleven. Based on recent performances, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan should probably start for United.
After signing Paul Pogba for a world record transfer fee, Jose Mourinho struggled to find him an ideal midfield partner. The introduction of Carrick and Herrera in midfield has allowed Pogba to push forward and attack, a position in which he thrives. United shall, however, miss the services of Centre Back Eric Baily who will be representing Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations.

Liverpool

Klopp's men are known to steal victories away from home in big games
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have played put on some of the League’s most breathtaking attacking displays. Their free-flowing style of play coupled with Klopp’s famed Gengen-pressing has made Liverpool one of the most potent attacking units with an average of 2.90 goals per game. With the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Phillipe Coutinho and Adam Lallana in their midst Liverpool are capable of dismantling any defence in the league. Liverpool may be second in the league but all is not well with the Reds. Liverpool’s leaky backline has resulted in a few mishaps like the games against Burnley and Bournemouth. Liverpool’s form off-late has been patchy with a draw against Sunderland in the league, a draw against Plymouth in the FA cup and a loss against Southampton in the EFL Cup.

Probable Starting XI (4-3-3)

Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan, James Milner, Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Phillippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino

Talking Points
Will Mane's absence make all the difference?
The absence of top scorer Sadio Mane who is on African Cup of Nations duty will surely affect Klopp’s preparation for the game. Mane has been the driving force behind Liverpool’s exploits in front of goal this season. Mane’s pace, physicality and lethal finishing have rendered Liverpool a force to reckon with. However, Liverpool would welcome back the diminutive Brazilian maestro Phillipe Coutinho who returns from an injury layoff. Adam Lallana has been in scintillating form this season netting in 7 goals and 7 assists for the Reds. He would look to continue his run of good form alongside Roberto Firmino who has scored 6 goals and 3 assists. With Jordan Henderson’s influence in midfield and Emre Can’s work rate Liverpool pose a strong threat to United’s winning streak. Liverpool’s notorious defence will be a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp who would look to plug the gaps at the back, possibly replacing Ragnar Klavan with Joel Matip.

Predictions

Anthony Martial, Who?: A dream debut but can he repeat his feat
The last time these sides met a goalless draw was a huge positive for Jose Mourinho and his men but the situation has changed since. United would look to capitalise on Liverpool’s shaky form and rise up the table. Jose Mourinho has not had the best of times against Jurgen Klopp. In their 6 meetings, Mourinho has managed only 1 win and has lost 3 games, a record he would like to change. Liverpool, on their part, has not had the best of time at Old Trafford having lost 11 out of their last 14 games at the Theatre of Dreams. Liverpool’s last win at Old Trafford came in the 3-0 mauling of United during David Moyes’ disastrous 2014 campaign. Neutrals would love to see United get one over their rivals from Merseyside and throw open the race for the Top 4. Based on current form and recent history, United look all set to continue their unbeaten streak against Liverpool with a narrow victory on Sunday.

Return to the Lane: Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea

In this comeback article by 18 Yard Box, our very own Pranav Shenoy takes a look at the mega clash today.

2017's first big encounter

The first big game of 2017 brings us a mouth-watering clash between table-toppers, Chelsea and perennial underachievers, Tottenham Hotspur. Given its implications on the title race and Champions’ League Qualification, the Top 6 would have their sights firmly set on this fixture. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are on a 13 match winning streak and would be keen to top Arsenal’s record (13) with a win against their London rivals. Victory against Spurs would further extend their lead at the top of the table after second-placed Liverpool managed only a draw against Sunderland this gameweek. Fifth placed Spurs would look to cut the 10 point gap between them and the leaders.
18YB’s Pranav Shenoy previews this game for us:

Tottenham Hotspur:

Does Pochettino have another masterclass in store?

In a star-studded league with marquee managers like Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp, it was Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham that remained undefeated for the longest time till Chelsea beat them at Stamford Bridge. Following their defeat at the hands of Manchester United, Spurs have gone on a 4-match winning streak of their own and would look to avenge their defeat against Chelsea in November.

Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1)

Hugo Lloris (GK), Kyle Walker, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Dembele, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Harry Kane

Talking Points

The return of Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen to the starting line-up would strengthen Spurs’ defence after the duo missed the game against Watford through suspension but it is at the other end of the pitch that Tottenham would want to focus on.

Can they deliver when it matters the most?
Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have been in great form recently notching up assists and goals at a consistent pace but it is the form of their faltering striker Harry Kane that is a cause for concern. Last season’s highest scorer, Kane, is known to hit devastating form in the second half of the season. The 23-year-old notched up just nine league goals up to Christmas last year before adding 16 to win the Golden boot award ahead of Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. With the likes of Son and an in-form Alli to partner Kane, Spurs surely have enough firepower to trouble the Chelsea defence.

Chelsea
Antonio Conte: The man behind Chelsea's Resurrection
Following the thrashing at the hands of Arsenal, very few would have predicted Chelsea’s firm 5 point lead at the top of the table at the end of 2016. Antonio Conte has successfully adopted what many managers have failed miserably at, a three-man defence. Chelsea’s 3-4-3 has combined the best of robust defending with ruthless attacking, making the best use of their abilities at both ends of the pitch. Chelsea scored 32 goals and conceded just 4 while collecting all 39 points.

Probable Starting XI (3-4-3):

Thibaut Courtois, Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, N’golo Kante, Nemanja Matic, Marcos Alonso, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard, Pedro, Diego Costa

Talking Points:
Incisive. Impenetrable. Unstoppable

Chelsea would be happy to see the return of Pedro, whose scorcher against Spurs in the earlier leg set the tone for their comeback victory. Antonio Conte has several credible options in the middle of the park following Cesc Fabregas’s incredible performances in the absence of Matic. Diego Costa has been a force to reckon with this season with 14 goals and 5 assists to his name coupled with a clean disciplinary record for the otherwise much maligned striker. With Hazard, Willian and Pedro in support and Kante and Matic marshalling the centre of the park, Chelsea already look like firm favourites for the title. Azpilicueta, Luiz and Cahill have been impeccable at the back and would look to shut out Tottenham’s blitzkrieg.

Predictions:

Encore: Can Spurs repeat the heroics of the evening that ushered in 2015?
Recent form might indicate a comfortable win for Chelsea but a look at their record at White Hart Lane might suggest otherwise. Chelsea have won only one of their last 10 Premier League matches at White Hart Lane (D5, L4) with their last win coming in October 2012. Spurs have previously managed to halt Manchester City’s unbeaten streak and turn the title chase on its head. The two evenly matched teams will probably see out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Sanju Pradhan ties up with Decathlon Sports India

Decathlon Sports India has partnered with Indian winger Sanju Pradhan to support their Football brand “Kipsta” in India.

The French Sports retail giant, who has been operating large format sports hypermarkets in India since 2009, has decided to enter the Indian football scene by getting on board the Pune City FC player to provide Usage Feedback and to be a Technical Partner to the brand. The company has been operating in India since 1998 but has only ventured into B2C business in 2009. Having expanded rapidly to 38 stores till date, the company felt it is the right time to get on board a face the Indian user base can connect with.

Representatives of Decathlon Sports India with Sanju Pradhan

“As team members of Decathlon, the philosophy is to connect with young players so that they recognize our brand from a very young age and grow along with it. The focus is always on making sports accessible to more and more Indians and that is exactly where this tie up helps us. Mr. Sanju’s is a face that connects with the Indian youth and that is why he is on board to give us his feedback on the products so that we keep improving in terms of quality and technicality.”, says Mr. Shashwat Bansal, Commercial Manager of Kipsta at Decathlon Sports India.

The agreement is effective from July 2016 and will see Pradhan sport merchandise from Kipsta in all official games and sport related appearances.“Decathlon covers a wide range with regards to technicality from a beginner level product to a professional level product and that is why it is a one stop solution for all sport needs. Having visited a couple of stores, I had a fair idea about their ambition in India. When I came to know of this potential tie up, I was excited to be a part of making sports accessible to all.”, says the newly signed Pune City FC player.

Sanju Pradhan posted this image on his official Instagram account, showcasing his new Kipsta merchandise

He continues,"The products that Decathlon has to offer are something that is needed in a country like India where there are not many top quality sports products available at affordable prices. With the strategies they have in place, I am sure they will reach out to more and more Indians which will benefit the standard of sports in this country”. All in all, it definitely looks like a start to something new in the Indian football scene.

Preview: Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC

Preview: Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC

Just two weeks into the season and Premier League fans have already witnessed top teams at loggerheads. Week 3 will be no different. Monday night action sees Liverpool visit the Emirates stadium. In what has been a false start for the hopeful contenders of every season (Arsenal), Liverpool have begun solidly. Let’s look at what we can expect from this game.

A 6-pointer at The Emirates

Arsenal-

After an embarrassing defeat to West Ham on the opening day, the Gunners were bright against Crystal Palace. They looked very good offensively against a tough Palace side last week but were exposed at the back quite a few times. However, they earned a valuable 3 points to get off the mark this campaign.

With their rivals having invested plenty of money over the transfer window, the Gooners are growing more impatient with each passing day.  The squad looks very solid and it is probably for the first time over a decade that they have been able to retain the core of the side. But the big question seems to be whether the likes of Coquelin and Giroud are good enough to keep them alive in all competitions? Media is buzzing with the news of Karim Benzema joining the Arsenal ranks, but there is nothing concrete yet that shows there might be a deal in place.

Arsenal's lone summer signing has cut a sorry figure thus far!!
Last week, Coquelin couldn't cope up with Bolasie and Zaha running through the centre of the pitch. It has raised some serious question marks over his lack of composure, something he was known for earlier in his early days. On the other side of the pitch, some fans seem to have lost faith in Cech already. Only way to soothe their nerves is to put a tie of this stature to bed and collect 3points.
Coming to how they might lineup on Monday night, Arsenal are spoilt for choices. Unfortunately, every change invokes one problem or the other. Will Theo get a shot ahead of Giroud on Monday? Will The Ox, who has looked very impressive, make his way into the side? This is one conundrum Wenger will have to deal with all season long.

Liverpool-

As for Liverpool, a 100% record is certainly a solid way to begin the season, but neither their play nor the scorelines (1-0's) instil belief that come April, Liverpool would be in the title race. New boy, Nathaniel Clyne has integrated into the team very easily, also Benteke put in a promising performance against AFC Bournemouth. But it is their talisman from last season, Coutinho, who is calling the shots over the new boys at the club. Christian Benteke is going to be a big draw for this fixture. His aerial threat will certainly keep Arsenal's CB pair on their toes. With Sturridge sidelined for long & Firmino yet to pace up to the English game there isn't much one can tweak with their lineup.

The more serious matter for the fans was regarding the departure of club legend Steven Gerrard this summer, the KOP fans were bewildered as to how the team, especially the midfield, will cope up in his absence. But newly appointed club captain, Henderson has taken over the mantle with great aplomb and with his teammate Coutinho putting in equally impressive performances; the duo have continued their good form from last season.

Jordan Henderson Steven Gerrard
Henderson has proved to be an able successor to the KOP Legend.

Possible Outcome-

Although it is early in the season, games like these are 6-pointers. Home or away, it is not only a matter of winning 3 points but also not allowing your rivals earn points. The way these two clubs, it surely won't be a languid affair. With an array of stylish and attacking players on the field, even the neutrals will be hooked to this game, whatever be the result. Goals are not a problem as this fixture has seen plenty of goals on either side over the past few meetings.

Who doesn't remember this 8 goal thriller?

Arshavin won't be playing this time around, but with home advantage on their side, I pip Arsenal to nick 3 points on Monday.

How Pedro can turn Chelsea into Champions again

Spaniard Pedro signed for Chelsea adding unpredictability and variation to Jose Mourinho's side

With Jose Mourinho’s revelation of the one minute conversation that led to the arrival of Pedro to Stamford Bridge, the complexion of Chelsea’s attack has changed. While Pedro won’t immediately change Chelsea’s fortunes, his arrival gives them a much needed competition for the right wing berth. Being ambidextrous, he gives this already quality attack an extra edge.

Since the second half of last season, Chelsea’s attacking options seemed very limited. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa were the only ones to reach double digit figures in terms of goals scored. The supremely hard working Willian too has more often than not been disappointing in his finishing and getting into scoring positions. The Spaniard’s arrival adds more directness to their attack. Apart from that, Pedro’s quality of making intelligent runs across from the wings into the centre adds another dimension to their attack.

Mourinho's new signing Pedro can turn Chelsea into Champions again

It is this extra dimension which is missing from all their attacking midfielders bar Eden Hazard. All of them are more comfortable having the ball at their feet, making runs down the wings and crossing the ball. Except Andre Schurrle in recent history, one has to look back to the 2004-2006 period when Chelsea had Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben as wingers who had the capabilities to drift central and score goals.

Given Andre Schurrle’s form was never the same in the 2014-15 season after the World Cup, but his intelligent movements off the ball always posed a threat to the opposition. His run in behind the defence from a wide position to finish off an exquisite pass from Cesc Fabregas against Burnley showed how well he could anticipate a pass.

Pedro brings exactly this variation which will be a huge bonus for players like Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas who rely on the movements of other players to play in that killer pass. Having played under Pep Guardiola, Pedro is very much used to pressing the opposition, which also suits very well into Mourinho’s style of play.

Pedro's goal scoring ability gives them the option to switch to a 4-3-3, as it was with Robbe, Gudjohnsen and Drogba

Pedro’s arrival also allows Chelsea to effectively change their formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3. Mourinho preferred using the 4-2-3-1 in most of the games but opted for a 4-3-3 for the tough away game with Ramires coming in the right midfield in place of Oscar. Ramires’ work rate is impeccable but his passing ability and creativity is suspect. With an effective right winger in the form of Pedro coming in, Willian can be shifted to right midfield alongside Cesc Fabregas with Matic anchoring the two. This formation will be similar to how Chelsea played under Mourinho a decade back with Claude Makalele anchoring Michael Essien and Frank Lampard, with Robben and Duff/Gudjohnsen on the wings. They also had a striker in Didier Drogba who could occupy both the opposition centre backs.

Willian has played as a midfielder before such as in the 1-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad during the 2013-14 season. His work rate helped stifle Yaya Toure’s influence in the game. Willian has the necessary qualities to be an effective box to box midfielder. His positional change may have a similar impact on his play like it did on Angel Di Maria during his final season at Real Madrid. Just like Willian, Di Maria too was an out and out winger. To accommodate the world record signing, Gareth Bale, Carlo Ancelotti shifted Di Maria to left midfield. That resulted in Di Maria having his best season during his Real Madrid career with his performance in the Champions League final being the cherry on the cake.

All in all, the capture of the Spaniard gives a much needed rejuvenation to the Chelsea attack. Pedro’s directness, intelligence and pace would be crucial for Mourinho’s men if they want to retain their title.
