Pro Evolution Soccer [PES] 13: Game Review

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is the latest addition to the PES Franchise from the Japanese developers, KONAMI.

Here, we'll be discussing the games ups and downs, methods to rectify them and the final verdict.

Gameplay:

Gameplay is better than PES 12

The characterisation of players have been done pretty well in PES 13. If you choose Real Madrid and you have a basic set of skills, you'll probably win the game because  Ronaldo will just destroy the opponent's defence just like he often does in reality. He is in other words UNSTOPPABLE. This time around KONAMI has worked in both the directions- game-play and glamour. Hence, they have somewhat imprinted many players' dribbling, passing, sprinting, shooting styles into their virtual avatars to give the game a more realistic effect with the trademark Ronaldo sprint and many more.

The player ratings have been improved, with more life-like ratings left with some scope of improvement.

The most hated bug in the game, which was the mad charge by the Goalkeeper in case of 1v1 situations has been dealt with, with the keeper now in his senses and he charges to a limit considering all the gaps.

Player passing has been improved and made more fluidic. If a pass isn't given a proper direction with the correct power, it'll go haywire.

They have also added a few more features such as Player resembling movement, Improved Defensive AI  which is a huge step forward for PES.

One little thing though, they still haven't addressed the hand ball situation which is going to create a little fuzz amongst players. However the keeper back-pass bug has been taken care of.

Graphics:

The graphics are realistic

Not many changes in graphics as they were near perfect in 12 itself, but there are slight improvements here too with players not looking like zombies when they celebrate.  And even if someone doesn't like the pre-installed models of players, PES 13 is so easy to patch, anyone can find mods online and get the faces fixed.

Little tweaks with the fan celebrations, 'boos and awhs' give out a good "in-game" effect.

There are those mini cut scenes which show a new signing being presented to the media and a stadium presentation ( for players costing above 40/50 M+ )

Talking about glamour, here's something they certainly deserve an applaud for . All spot kick techniques remain the same, but now you can control the amount of power you put in a GK's long throw and direct it to further players for quick counters.

The Master League:

The Master League

PES 2013 is with an all new training system in the Master League, where you have to assign trainers, equipments, etc. to a player to make him develop. Better than the previous instalment, which was a total disaster.

Equipments include weights/mini-net, balance pad, personal trainers, conditioning trainers and many more, which basically help increase the player's shooting, defending, form, stamina, speed and overall rating.

You can also give player's boots which get unlocked gradually as you progress through the ML and you can equip them to players to slightly improve their sprint speed, shooting, swerve, etc.
Master League of PES is better than FIFA due to the following points :

  1. Licensed UEFA Champions League.
  2. Better training system.
  3. Player skills improve mostly from training, but as in real life, they get a "breakthrough" when  played in league/Europe matches.
  4. Player Transfer system is better.

The Downs:

The Player Transfer System -  As always, PES has kept the transfer system the same as the previous versions but this time they have added a "Chances of Joining" feature, which decides whether the player will actually consider your bid.

In PES, like previous instalments, a player can again select coaches, doctors, scouts in accordance to his budget.

The player transfer system

The EPL is still not fully licensed with only Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs being licensed teams. The fix to this is:
1. Mods/Patches available online.
2. Edit Mode.

The hand-ball issue is still hasn't been looked upon by the developers and is bound to be cause discrepancies between players. There is no fix for that unfortunately.

The Commentary-  Since the 4 years, the commentary has just been stagnant as the commentators at times make bizzare irrelevant comments such as "And he curls it in" when the striker scores a tap-in goal. It certainly requires drastic improvements if it wants to compete against FIFA in the Global market.

When compared to FIFA:

Comparison

It is the same old story. If a player is willing to get the game mods and apply them for licensing of clubs and get the player models (incase he doesn't like how the player looks) to change them and also bear with the sub-standard commentary, then PES just might be a better game than FIFA.

FIFA fans may not want to switch over to PES this year too though, because of its fast gameplay, but as for the PES fans, it couldn't get better.

The Final Verdict:

PES 13 for me slightly edges over the FIFA franchise. Fluidic gameplay and slick passes make all the difference for me this year. But a substandard commentary and also some glitches in the gameplay might be causes of concern for the PES owners and also might cause a loss of their regular buyers.
