News of the Day

A new day and loads of transfers going through. 18 Yard Box has a look at the three important news of the day.

New day, new beginning and new developments in the football world. The premier league had its share of games last night and most went as per expectation except that Chelsea lost to QPR at home. The Rafa boo boys will be back again now.

18 yard box takes a look at the news making the rounds in the UK today.

The Merseysiders march on as Chelsea lose ground

He is on song

Upto 5th in the table and an away win against the hapless Newcastle team, David Moyes can well afford to dream. A sublime Leighton Baines free kick and a late Anichebe goal ensured that the Toffees take away all 3 points and jump above Arsenal to the 5th spot in the league standings.

Their neighbours also started the new year with a 3-0 victory over the Black Cats. Liverpool, who recently completed the deal of Daniel Sturridge, did not look uncomfortable in the match which saw their Uruguayan starlet score twice and setting the third for Raheem Sterling. This win takes Liverpool to the 8th place in the League.

While the Merseysiders were gathering points, Chelsea lost out on a great opportunity to keep up the chase with the Manchester clubs. The Chelsea old boy Shaun Wright Phillips scored the only goal of the game to earn QPR a shocking victory over the European Champions.

Ba completes Chelsea move

Chelsea welcomes Demba Ba

In an interview for Sky Sports, the Newcaslte manager announced that Chelsea were successful in triggering the  £7.5 million release clause for the Senegal striker. Alan Pardew announced with a heavy heart stating, "Well there's no swift resolution, it's done, he'll go to Chelsea and with our blessing.

“He's been fantastic for us, it's a good club and good luck to him. For us, it's not a bad thing, for all the uncertainty, it's now done, and we'll move on. In some respects I'm pleased."

Although the Chelsea football club has not officially announced Ba's arrival, Benitez is keen to recruit him before the weekend.

Arsenal close in on an agreement with Theo

The ball's in Theo's court

The Arsenal manager has hinted that the club has reached an agreement with Theo Walcott and he will be the 5th Englishman to extend his contract with the Gunners following Gibbs, Wilshere, Chamberlain and Jenkinson.

The Arsenal contract rebel has been reluctant so far but Wenger says, "We are talking. Yes [I am encouraged by the talks]. "It is very difficult to be predictable in this kind of situation, but I always said that our desire is there to do it as quickly as possible. We are ready to do it. I only speak for our side, and my side is that we want him to stay here.

"Of course I don't want to speak much more about that situation because it can be misinterpreted and I don't think he is only interested by money. I don't believe that."

When asked about the transfer activity of the club Wenger says that he would want to resolve the 'Theo' situation first and then consider other options.
