News of the Day

18 Yard Box brings you the top 3 news of the day.

In what appeared to be a transfer frenzy day, one club were the winners whereas the EPL's selling club looks to be getting rid of extra players before adding some. Have a look.

West Ham play big
A young Cole for West Ham
West Ham United were the biggest gainers in the transfer window today as they secured two top signings. They have confirmed the permanent deal for Liverpool's Joe Cole. Moreover, a loan deal for Arsenal's Marouane Chamakh is also on the cards with the Moroccan international keen on a move away from North London.

Cole, who was not one of the favourites in Liverpool, has chosen West Ham as his next destination. He said, "It is a great move for me," the London-born midfielder was quoted as saying on West Ham's official website.

"Coming back here brings back all the memories of the pitches I learnt how to play on. This is where I learnt my trade and I'm happy to have another chance to be here.

"I've always loved West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable seasons. The timing was right for me to come back and I'm happy. I'm back in London and I'm delighted to be here."

Newcastle sign French right back
Debuchy selects to be a Magpie
Newcaslte United have officially announced the signing of the Mathieu Debuchy from Lille. The French right back has signed a deal which will keep him at the land of Toons for 5 and a half years. This comes as a pleasant news for the Magpies as they lost out on their star striker Demba Ba to Chelsea a day ago.

Debuchy said, "I hope I can bring something fresh to the team and help us get up to the highest possible position in the Premier League this season," Debuchy told the club’s official website.

"I will give everything for this club."

The Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew, praised the full back. "It's no secret we've been trailing him for some time now and to have reached this point fills me with great excitement and anticipation in respect of what he will be able to offer the team," said the Newcastle manager.

"At the same time it's a huge relief to actually have him with us now.

"He is an established top international player and it is a real coup for this club that we now have him at St James' Park."

Terry wants the no. 8 shirt to be retired

Kissing the club goodbye

Speculations are rife that Frank Lampard could be on his way out of Chelsea. The 34 year old Chelsea veteran has been refused a contract by the Chelsea officials and could see out the season, following which he would be available as a free agent. He has already been linked with a move to Beckham's LA Galaxy.

In the wake of this possible departure, Chelsea captain John Terry thinks that the number 8 shirt of the Chelsea legend should not be passed on and that it should be 'retired'. Terry, on his personal Webstagram account wrote,"Devastated is an understatement. We should retire the number 8 shirt in honour of Lamps." He also paid tribute to the midfielder by stating, "#theheartbeat #hero #legend #hero #goalmachine #friend #ktbffh [keep the blue flag flying high] #cfc #chelsea."
