Mid Season Review: Arsenal

18 Yard Box has a look at the Gunners' season so far.

It has been a topsy turvy season for the Gunners as they find themselves in the 5th position with one game in hand. Arsene Wenger's men, who started their season poorly, have picked themselves up and have hit the ground on fire ever since they got knocked out by Bradford in the Capital One Cup.

18 Yard Box's Rishabh Ghai has a look at Arsenal's title chances and suggests the additions the Gunners can make to strengthen their squad in January.

Fans would want their old Arsenal back

Title Chances

Arsenal should realistically aim for the top 4 rather than the title at this point. Sitting on 5th place with a game in hand, Arsenal are the top contenders to grab the 4th spot this season. If the present run of performances continue, Arsenal have a great shot at the automatic qualification berth. 16 points behind with half the season gone is not a pretty sight for the Arsenal faithfuls.

As far as the other silverware is concerned a tough away fixture against Swansea might see them struggle in the FA Cup should they play their young squad. Champions League Round of 16 sees them face the mighty Bavarians (Bayern Munich). Munich, who have been involved in 2 of the last 3 Champions League finals, have set Bundesliga on fire with their stellar signings. They will be a tough nut to crack.

Realistically, the Gunners should be looking at the top 4 this season and build on again from the next. They still possess an outside chance of winning the FA Cup but their focus should be on playing the Champions League next season.

Woes

It comes as a great surprise that the Gunners' woes comes in their inconsistency in attack. Arsene Wenger's men have been known to play a great brand of attacking football over the years but have failed to live upto it this year. Although there have been scorelines like 6-1,5-2, 7-3 and 7-5 involving them this season, Arsenal's strike force hasnt performed upto the mark. The replacement of Robin Van Persie, Olivier Giroud, has taken a lot of time to adjust to the Premier League for the Gunner's liking. Podolski on the left wing has looked like a fish out of the water and Gervinho has been shambolic.

Another cause of concern is Arsenal's midfield. When they click, it is impossible to stop them but on their off days they look stagnant and stale. The one touch passing has vanished completely. They have looked have resorted to the easier way of playing the ball to the flanks rather than find those penetrating balls which the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri had done in their hay days at Arsenal.  Arsenal's defence looks better than before but their captain Thomas Vermaelen seems to be less than happy to lead the team. Not taking charge of the team at times, the enjoyment of playing for Arsenal has vanished from his face. He needs to lead from the front if Arsenal aim for a silverware this season.

Gervinho has not been himself

Tactical Overview

When Gervinho plays as the central striker forcing Podolski on the left, you can see that Arsenal have lacked tactically.

Arsenal's rigid 4-2-3-1 has seen them fail miserably at times this season. The midfield trio of Arteta, Cazorla and Wilshere do not add a quality cover for the back four causing them to come deep and help each other out thereby wasting their attacking talent. Arsenal have lacked a Gilberto Silva-esque sort of a player who could sit back and allow the front two midfielders to wreck havoc without worrying about tracking back.

Podolski looks to be doing great when he operates a little centrally. His vision to pick out Gibbs' runs and his exchanges with Cazorla have been a treat to watch.

Wenger, who has criticised of playing players out of position, has worked wonders by playing Cazorla as one behind the striker. Traditionally a winger, Cazorla has been a revelation in the red and white for the Gunners and has filled the void left by the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Just as Cazorla is blooming in his new role, Theo Walcott too has done brilliantly in the new centre forward role which he has craved for so long.

With transfer window about to be opened, Wenger would surely be looking to add to his squad. 18 Yard Box has a few suggestions which the Gunners boss could consider to strengthen his current crop.

18YB Suggests

In this section 18 Yard Box suggests the players that could help Arsenal strengthen themselves. (These players need not be linked with the club and are purely suggestions)

Wilfried Zaha

Could he be the one Arsenal win?

Arsenal's wingmen have struggled to perform this season. Gervinho has not replicated his form which he showcased for Lille and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain is still suffering from the second season syndrome. Although, the performances have been improving for the 19 year old former Southampton player, Arsenal will look to add in this department to improve their squad depth. One name which has been strongly linked with the Gunners is that of Wilfried Zaha.

The English international is being considered as one of the hottest properties in England and has showcased immense potential for Crystal Palace. Zaha, who alongiwith his direct play, knows where the net is, has announced publicaly that he is an Arsenal fan and is ready for a switch to the Premier League. This might be an indication that he will be the first player to be welcomed at the Emirates. Rated at 8 million, he would sit perfectly within Wenger's budget and considering the manager's liking towards young players, he would be an exciting addition.

David Villa

Will he come? Looks unlikely

The Spanish sensation has been linked with a loan move to the Emirates. At 31 years of age, this seems to be the perfect opportunity for both, the club as well as the player, to grab. Arsenal are in need of a prolific goal scorer who can replace Robin Van Persie and also aide Giroud and Walcott considering the departure of Gervinho to the African Cup of Nations. David Villa seems to provide answers to all the Arsenal questions. Although, not a regular with the Barcelona side, his heading and finishing abilities is known to the world. The Euro 2008 Golden Boot winner still has it in him to lit the Premier League on fire.

David Villa had been previously linked with the Gunners and relishes an opportunity to play in the Premier League. This might be the train he might want to jump on.

Yann M'Villa

Could the most unlikeliest of deals happen?

France's hottest property has gone down from being touted as the next Viera to being a flop. The 21 year old was strongly linked with a move to the Gunners in the summer but his behaviour in public seems to cold Wenger's interest in him. Although he is not the same player he was for Rennes last year, he could be the answer to Wenger's midfield woes. He could turn out to be a great buy if Wenger does consider him as an option as he would allow the likes of Cazorla and Wilshere to attack with more freedom.

News of the Day

18 Yard Box has a look at the news doing the rounds today

Hope the Christmas fever has come down a bit and we can now look forward to the new year. In terms of the Premier League though, nothing stops. Here are the top new making rounds as of today.

Rodgers calls for Consistency

Its time for results

"Its about consistency and efficiency", says Brendan Rodgers. The Liverpool boss has indicated that playing for Liverpool demands consistency and a week in week out performance rather than a one off. This coming of the back of a defeat to Stoke after having won comfortably against Wigan. Liverpool play QPR this week and will be looking to get maximum points against the bottom placed team in the league.

Liverpool, who have looked increasingly sharp at some occasions, have been far too incosistent this season and will be looking to set that right before the chance of a top 4 finish slips from their hands.

 Chelsea eye Alvaro Negredo

What will the Spaniard bring for the Blues?

Reports emanating from UK suggest that Spanish international Alvaro Negredo could well be on the way to Chelsea for a fee of 15 million euros.

Various sources suggest that the Sevilla forward could well be the back up to Torres and also team up with his Spanish compatriot when need be. With Daniel Sturridge on ther verge of making a move to Liverpool, Chelsea intend to use the money generated from his sale to ensure the services of the tall centre forward.

AIFF issue a ban on Mohun Bagan

What lies ahead for MMB?

The West Bengal giants have been banned by the AIFF governing committee on the grounds of violation of section 22(c). Mc Dowell's Mohun Bagan left the field during the Kolkata Derby played earlier this month.

The crowd went berserk inside the Salt Lake Stadium, pelting stones, bricks and all sorts of things which injured the Bagan midfielder Rahim Nabi. The Bagan players thought the situation to be going out of control and left the pitch thereby forfeiting the match.

As reported by Goal.com, the I League committee which sat today, surprisingly found the reason invalid and have decided to take strict actions against the club. They have docked off their points and have asked the club to withdraw themselves from the I-League this season and have imposed a further 2 year ban which might see the I-League missing one of its most prestigious teams in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 season. Further decision regarding the fine and the extension of the ban will be taken by the committee who will sit next month to decide the club's ultimate fate.

News of the Day

18 Yard Box has a look at the news which grabbed the headlines today.

Today we have some exciting transfer news. Where one club is trying to get their legend back to the club, the other seems to be planning a quiet January market.

Take a look.

No signings in the January exepected: Platt

Can he bring someone in?
David Platt, assistant manager at Manchester City, has announed that City are planning a dry transfer window.

He said, "I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't do any business." With City being linked with Walcott, Isco and Falcao, its hard to imagine this situation cropping up with the spending habit of the champions known to everyone.

Shocking as it may seem but City will have to chase the League leaders with the present squad they have as Mancini looks to be experiencing his most difficult period at the club yet.

Ba- No, Henry-Maybe

Will he be back?

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger refused to be drawn under the transfer speculation of the club being linked to the Newcaslte United striker Demba Ba. With Arsenal taking on the Toon army on saturday Wenger said, "It is not right to speak about him because he plays against us tomorrow. If you ask 'do we sign him?' I say no."

Wenger also refused to announce any of his plans for the January transfer market publically but said that a move for the club legend Theirry Henry is still on. He said, "Any interest we have in any player has to be kept secret so I cannot come out with any names."

"I have not lost interest in him [Henry], he is still coming today to practise with us. I have not ruled out a move completely."

Sir Alex Ferguson hits at out NUFC and their manager Pardew

Ferguson defends himself

The Manchester United manager has hit back Alan Pardew stating that he makes a 'joke' of the referees. He also went on to say that Newcastle is a 'wee' club.

Ferguson, who went berserk on the touchline when the disallowed own goal of Johnny Evans was ultimately given to Newcastle, justified his actions by stating, "I was demonstrative but I was not out of order. The press have had a field day. The only person they have not spoken to is Barack Obama because he is busy. It is unfortunate but I am the manager of the most famous club in the world. Not Newcastle, a wee club in the north east."

"Alan Pardew has come out and criticised me. He is the worst at haranguing referees. He shoves them and makes a joke of it. How he can criticise me is unbelievable. He forgets the help I gave him, by the way", he said later.

Other headlines

1. Bredan Rodgers hoping for early January moves in the transfer market.

2. Wenger impressed by Mikel Arteta's character.

3. Bayern do not want Holtby.

4. Karanka: Iker still does not know why he was left out.

5. Aguero confident of returning to top form.

News of the Day

18 Yard Box brings to the readers the roundup of all the Premier League matches that took place on the Boxing Day.

Its a tradition of the Premier League to have thrillers on the Boxing Day. And the day did not disappoint us. Today's roundup consists of a 4-3 thriller, a fantastic solo effort at goal to deny the Champions and much more.

Boxing Day Bout at Manchester

Chicha magic works wonders for United

A traditional Boxing Day thriller was played at Old Trafford between the League leaders and Newcastle United. A game which saw United come back three times saw them take a lead in the dying minutes of the game through Javier Hernandez finish from a lovely ball from Michael Carrick.

James Perch followed in Demba Ba's strike, which was parried out by David De Gea, to give the Toons the lead in the 4th minute. However United came back into the game when a Robin Van Persie free kick created confusion in the penalty area only for Evans to capitalise. Evans soon scored again but this time for Newcastle as a contentuous goal was awarded to Newcastle. United soon hit back from an Evra strike which was followed by Papiss Cisse's third goal of the season to take Newcastle's tally to 3 on the night. Just as when United were looked to have been beaten Robin Van Persie struck to equalise for United after which Chicharito won them the tie in the 90th minute.

Mata wins it for the Blues

Chelsea ride on a Juan Mata stunner

Chelsea, coming off an emphatic 8-0 win against the Villains, took on a tough Norwich side at Carrow Road.

Mata came close early on but could not put the ball into the net from 6 yards out. He soon made amends when he struck a superb curling drive into the top corner to take the lead for Chelsea. The Blues came close during the second half to doubling their lead however John Ruddy stood in between them and the goal. It ended 1-0 on the night as Chelsea edged closer to the two Manchester clubs.

City drift apart

Inspirational perfromance by Mignolet kept City at bay
Manchester City lost ground in the title race as Martin O'Neil's Sunderland side shocked the Champions in a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.

A curling strike from the former City man Adam Johnson saw Joe Hart make a meal of it as it crept under his arms into the net. City looked to be the better side, however, a man of the match performance from the Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet restricted City from opening the scoring. Sessegnon came close twice to doubling The Black Cat's lead but could not convert his chances.

This is the second loss of the season for Roberto Mancini's men as they fall 7 points adrift the League leaders Manchester United.

Other Headlines

1. Everton grab a 2-1 win over Wigan Atheltic

2. West Brom inflict further wounds on QPR as they ended up winning 2-1

3. Berbatov starred in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

4. Michu fluffs his lines as Swansea draw a blank against Reading.

5. Wenger says he will only buy 'exceptional players' in January.

News of the Day

18 Yard Box brings to you another instalment of their daily dose of the News of the Day column

A Spaniard awaits his call up, a manger faces his toughest challenge and much more in today's News of the Day.

Take a look.

QPR business my toughest job: Redknapp

Redknapp feeling the heat
The former Spurs manager has come out saying that keeping QPR up in the Premier League would be a great achievement for both, the club as well as the players.

Harry, who took over the reins from Mark Hughes, has managed a single win in QPR's last 5 games. Despite this, QPR's performances have been improving and the Portsmouth favourite has voiced his opinion as to what his target for his new club remains. Speaking to Sky Sports he said, "We've got a challenge on and if we can pull this one off between us, the players, myself, the owners the fans, it will be a great achievement from everybody's perspective, and we're all looking forward to giving it a go."

He also claimed that this challenge would prove to be his toughest challenge if his managerial career. He said, "This probably would be (my biggest challenge ever). Going back to Portsmouth was a difficult one when I went back there having left and then having gone back, if I hadn't kept them up that year, I wouldn't be stood here now."

Michu on his way to Spain squad

Michu has his way

Vincente Del Bosque has resorted to Premier League's top scorer as his first choice replacement for underperforming Fernando Torres. Where the Euro 2012 Golden Boot winner has seen his miserable performance continue in the Premier League, his compatriot Michu has taken the League by storm. Scoring a staggering 13 goals in 18 games this season so far, Michu has convinced the Spain manager Del Bosque for a call up for the national side.

"Iago Aspas and Michu will appear," the World Cup-winning boss told Spanish television. He had already heaped plenty of praises for the 25 year old former Rayo Vallecano man.

He had said, "Michu deserves to be credited for his superb season. The way he has stood out in the league at a club like Swansea, which is not one of the top clubs, is exceptional.

"He's not an out-and-out striker and has been scoring a lot of goals like he did for Rayo Vallecano."

Luiz a midfielder? Yes: Benitez

Luiz is showing his class as a midfielder

The interim Chelsea boss is pindering over the possibility of playing the defender David Luiz in a more central midfield role.

Luiz played in the centre during the 8-0 demolition of Aston Villa in the weekend and the former Valencia manager has been impressed by his midfield performances.

He has to ability to play either position and has been a fantastic defender at this club," Benitez told The Sun. "People say that central midfield is also a role of him and I think they are right. You still have to have discipline and be in the right position and you can't take liberties. Against Villa, he showed that he has the discipline and the ability to do that role."

Other Headlines

1. Hodgson wants penalties if friendlies end in a draw.

2. Rodgers warns Sturridge of a central role.

3. Joachim Low still hurt over the manner of Germany's Euro'12 exit.

4. Wilshere wants Walcott stay.

Champions League draws out in Nyon, Switzerland

The Champions League knock round draws were decided today in Nyon and some spectacular  ties are awaiting fans. Holders Chelsea FC were already out of the running, the first time ever that a champion has bowed out so early in the competition.

Starting with the most venomous of all ties, it pits defending Spanish champions Real Madrd CF against English giants Manchester United FC. This tie will mark Cristiano Ronaldo's first appearance back at Old Trafford with fans and staff waiting for this moment since his departure. With these teams facing off last in 2003, this tie is certainly going to bring about huge excitement, not forgetting the rivalry between Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho.

Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford

German  giants Bayern Munich, who are last years' beaten finalists were drawn against English side Arsenal FC. It mars the homecoming of German nationals Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, who will be facing one of his former sides. This tie, although exciting, should prove to be in the favour of the German heavyweights.

Other draws included pitting Borussia Dortmund against the surprise package from Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk which should also prove to be one hell of a clash. The fast attacking side of Dortmund could face problems from the resolute defending side of Shakhtar.

The last of the exciting clashes for the Round of 16 is AC Milan v/s Barcelona. The sides are facing each other for the 5th and 6th time in the last 18 months and know all about each other. Although,  Milan have sold the majority of players from last year, it should still prove to be an exciting clash.

Valencia v/s PSG
Celtic v/s Juventus
Porto v/s Malaga

Top 3 News of the Day

18 Yard Box has a look at the various events that have transpired today.

Benteke downs Liverpool

Beneteke was the man of the match
Christian Beneteke was the orchestrator of Liverpool's downfall in a 3-1 shock defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

Liverpool's ailing home form in League continued as Benteke announced himself as one for the future in  his side's 3-1 victory. The Kops struggled to keep the 22 year old Belgian out of the game as his two goals sandwiched Weimann's goal won the match for Aston Villa. Although Steven Gerrard deflected Glenn Johnson's shot with his head, it was too late for them as Liverpool wasted plenty of glorious opportunites thoughout the game.

This loss leaves Liverpool in the 12th spot whereas Villa climbed up to the 14th

City keep up the pace with League leaders

Toure again the saviour
In what appeared to be an even contest, Manchester City came up with the all the 3 points against a well drilled Newcastle side.

The defending champions opened the scoring with Sergio Aguero finishing off a glorious pass from Samir Nasri. Javi Garcia doubled their lead before half time with a thumping header from a corner. Newcastle pulled one back at hour mark when Demba Ba headed from close range but City sealed the deal with a poacher-like goal from their talisman Yaya Toure.

Although the match ended 3-1 it was a much more even contest in the second half as Newcastle looked to be getting at the champions. However, at the end, City completed the job and kept their chase for the top spot within reach.

The Return of Vida
Vidic is back!
Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic marked his return to the top flight football after 3 months in their 3-1 win over the Black Cats.

Robin Van Persie's calm finish followed by a curling finish from Tom Cleverly in the first 21 minutes gave United a 2-0 lead at half time. Wayne Rooney tripled United's advantage in the second half before Sunderland found a consolation goal from Frazier Campbell's 72nd minute headed effort at goal.

United kept their 6 point advantage alive in the League and welcomed back arguably their best defender, at present, Nemanja Vidic from a 3 month long injury lay off. The return of the Serbian will provide the much needed steel at the back United have been lacking all season. It was a pleasant sight for the supporters of the Red Devils as they welcomed Vidic with a thunderous round of applause.

News of the Day

18 Yard Box brings to all football fans, the latest happenings of the Beautiful Game.

Chelsea beat Monterrey 3-1 in semi final of the Club World Cup to set up clash against Corinthians on Sunday

Chelsea today comfortably beat Mexican Champions Monterrey in the semi final of the Club World Cup by  goals from Mata, Torres and an own goal by Monterrey defender Chavez.

With David Luiz starting in an unfamiliar role of central midfield Benitez surely got his tactics right by playing him as the deep lying play maker. His passing, vision and movement was exquisite till the time he was on the pitch, providing Chelsea with an option in this position with Romeu out injured for 6 months.

As far as the game in general was concerned, Chelsea did not allow Monterrey to play their natural game of short and crisp passing. Every ball was chased down diligently making sure no space was given to their midfield. Hazard was outstanding on the night, as his combination play with Hazard and Oscar returned back to how it was at the start of the season

World Club Championship:Monterrey vs Chelsea,Juan Mata
Mata set the Blues on their way against Monterrey
The first goal was brilliantly created by Oscar's back heel to Cole, who picked out Mata just near the edge of the area and as always he coolly put it into the back of the net. Torres brilliantly held his run for the second goal to trap Hazard's cross but his rather off target shot was deflected into the goal.
The former Liverpool man was then again involved in the third as he crossed into the six yard box with the outside of his right boot, which Mata then directed towards the arriving Oscar. But the Brazilian's work was cut short by Chavez as he directed Mata's pass into his own net.

Now that Chelsea are on the brink of history by nearing another trophy in this calender year, the question is will it be enough to save their season ?

Yaya Toure wants to end career with Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has confirmed with the clubs website that he wants to retire at the club
He told the club's website: "I would love to end my career here.

"Nobody knows what the next step is in football and I believe that if you stop dreaming, you should stop playing football, but this is where I want to be.
"When I first arrived at City every time I went to sleep I would dream about us winning something and about us being the best team in whatever competition we take part in.
Yaya Toure wants to finish his career at City
"I believe I have to work harder all the time to improve and stay at the top level with this club.
"I will give my all every time I play and I will never forget how the fans have treated me here so nothing would give me greater pleasure than to finish my career as a Manchester City player."
With reports of his unrest doing the rounds just a few months back, this is one thing Mancini will be happy about.

Chelsea Fan who mocked Welbeck not to be charged

A Chelsea FC Fan who allegedly made a monkey gesture towards Danny Welbeck of Manchester United on the 30th of October in the Capitol One Cup clash will not be charged.

"The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) takes any allegation of racist chanting and/or behaviour very seriously and if any matters are brought to our attention they will of course be thoroughly investigated," a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

"The MPS routinely work very closely with football clubs and partner agencies to monitor behaviour to ensure public confidence and safety."

Although Chelsea FC had made assurances of such incidents not being allowed to happen from their fans, this has happened and shockingly no charges have been put against the 28 year old fan.
