However United came back into the game when a Robin Van Persie free kick created confusion in the penalty area only for Evans to capitalise. Evans soon scored again but this time for Newcastle as a contentuous goal was awarded to Newcastle. United soon hit back from an Evra strike which was followed by Papiss Cisse's third goal of the season to take Newcastle's tally to 3 on the night. Inspirational perfromance by Mignolet kept City at bay |
Manchester City lost ground in the title race as Martin O'Neil's Sunderland side shocked the Champions in a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.
A curling strike from the former City man Adam Johnson saw Joe Hart make a meal of it as it crept under his arms into the net. City looked to be the better side, however, a man of the match performance from the Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet restricted City from opening the scoring.
